The woman is tiny, standing facing the waves of a turbulent ocean, with a clearing sky at the top of the canvas. She crosses her arms above her head, as if to shield herself from the elements that are about to overwhelm her. No beach or ground to cling to, just her, so small, in front of black waves that fill almost the entire canvas. Small and fragile? Certainly. But alone? Not so certain. Also caught in the unleashed elements, the large triangle of golden brass symbolizes her masculine counterpart, or if we step away from purely male-female symbolism, simply the other, the different and unexpected person who can reach out a hand to help her look towards the clearing sky at the top of the canvas.
