Between Worlds
Exhibition Between Worlds presented at the Musée GRATALOUP from April 4 to November 11, 2026
In Between Worlds, GRATALOUP's paintings explore the fundamental balances of the world: matter and light, the earthly and the celestial, the visible and what remains beyond our sight.
The exhibition invites us to move through these shifting spaces, where forms emerge and disappear, and where human beings search for their place in a world that extends far beyond them.

Experience the Sound & Light Show

From the beginning of his career, GRATALOUP painted out of a desire to understand how the world is made, why it exists, and what place human beings occupy within it. This question runs through his entire body of work, never finding a final resolution. Painting offers no definitive answers. It is the very space in which the search unfolds.
The exhibition Between Worlds brings this inquiry into sharper focus. It brings together different planes of reality: matter and light, the earthly and the celestial, the visible and what eludes our perception. These worlds are not separate. They touch, overlap, and flow through one another. The pictorial space becomes an unstable threshold, a place where nothing is ever permanently fixed.
GRATALOUP works with simple motifs: a landscape, a circle, a horizon line. These forms become starting points for pictorial exploration. Through drawing, cutting, rubbing, layering, and the removal of material, he creates surfaces where painting moves between density and absence. The canvas is never an enclosed space, but a fragment of the world, drawn from a larger whole that we can never fully grasp.
In Between Worlds, the human figure is neither central nor dominant. When it appears, it is fragile and fleeting. It passes through without imposing order. It is caught in a movement greater than itself. This presence reminds us that human beings are part of the world, without being its center or the measure of all things.
Light plays an essential role in this exploration. It reveals as much as it conceals. Depending on the angle at which it falls, forms emerge or disappear, reminding us that our perception of reality is always partial, shaped by the conditions under which we experience it.
For GRATALOUP, painting is neither illustration nor explanation. It is a way of making a fundamental question visible while accepting that it must remain open. Between Worlds offers an experience without a final conclusion: one of fragile balance, of a presence suspended between darkness and light, between knowledge and mystery.
And if viewers leave with a feeling, an inner light, or simply the sense of having passed through something, then painting has fulfilled its purpose.
