Degas was interested in ballet at an early age and sketched his first studies of ballerinas in 1872. However, he avoided the real drama, the dance itself. Just as he painted the world of horse shows and jockeys before and after the race, he mainly showed the backstage of the ballet at the Opera. Here he opted for subtle and apparently fortuitous compositions, with unexpected angles. Little by little, the artist abandoned colors, in search of perfection in rhythm and balance.
